Baltimore's Global Refuge program, formerly known as Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, is seeking foster parents to provide temporary homes for unaccompanied migrants. With the number of migrants coming over the border increasing, the organization is in desperate need of more foster parents.

Jason Herring, a foster parent with Global Refuge, understands the challenges of taking in these children. Having cared for five kids between the ages of 7 and 12, Herring recognizes the resilience these children possess after going through more than most adults will experience in their lifetime.

Speaking about the reunification process, Herring expressed the joy and beauty of seeing a child excitedly reconnect with their loved ones. He emphasized that becoming a foster parent is a rewarding and enriching experience that sticks with you for a long time.

Amanda Nosle, Associate Director for Foster Care at Global Refuge, highlights the desperate need for foster parents to care for the children funded by the organization. The ongoing shortage of foster parents may jeopardize the programming.

Becoming a foster parent for Global Refuge does not require residing in Baltimore. However, foster parents must be able to transport the children to the organization's site downtown. The process of becoming a foster parent involves background checks, a home study, and training, which typically takes around three months.

Despite the challenges, foster parents like Herring find the experience to be a beautiful and heartwarming process. They not only provide a safe and comfortable environment for the children but also introduce them to American culture through various activities and events.

On average, the children stay in the program for 30 days or less. During this time, foster parents ensure their safety, wellbeing, and health while also creating meaningful and enjoyable experiences for them.

Baltimore's diverse community and its numerous multicultural events play a vital role in helping these children learn about different cultures that make up being an American.
